Power Flow

What is Vinyasa?

Vinyasa flow is all about the breath - flowing through postures with your breath leading the movement.

The breathing during Vinyasa is called ujjayi breath. The progression of the air passing through the lungs and throat generates internal body heat. It’s like a massage for the internal organs.

As your core becomes warm from the inside, the body becomes prepared for your practice.

With regular practice there are a multitude of benefits:

  • Core muscle strength increases
  • Joints are more supple and flexible
  • It calms the nervous system
  • Relieves stress and physical symptoms of tension
  •  Helps you lose weight
  • It increases upper body strength

All classes are 75-minutes  Check out the vinyasa yoga schedule and find a class that suits you.

A bit more about the heat...

Why warm vinyasa flow?

The room is heated to 35-38°C. In a warm room, you get all the benefits of Vinyasa... but it’s more effective..

Your muscles warm up quickly making them easier to stretch and lengthen. At the same time, the liquid surrounding the joints, synovial fluid, become less viscous, increasing the range of motion in your joints.

And then there’s the breathing. Practising in the heat requires calm, regular breath so during Vinyasa, breathing will become deeper, fuller and more even.

The science

As people have known for centuries, yoga has huge benefits for physical and mental health. This is especially so in the heat.

Here's why:

Your joints are surrounded by a liquid called synovial fluid.  Like many liquids, it becomes less viscous when it gets warm. Your joints become more mobile and your muscles are easier to stretch and flex. You’ll start noticing a difference after 2 or 3 classes.

The heat also increases your ability to burn calories, which is why it’s so great for losing weight.

And then there’s the breathing...

Deeeeep breathing... and why it’s important

Everyday life can be stressful. You're late for work, the boss is shouting at you, the kids are playing up, the train is late yet again...

Your body is in `fight or flight’ mode, producing adrenaline and corticosteroids. Sure, these were useful when hunting dangerous animals for our dinner.

They’re not helpful in the supermarket.

Deep breathing sends a message to the brain to relax, and your brain then passes this message to the body. You emerge from the class stress-free, with answers to problems that may have been troubling you for weeks.
