Restorative Yoga & Yin

What is yin yoga?

Yin is yoga, but with the volume turned down. In the Taoist tradition `yang’ relates to movement, whereas `yin’ is about finding stillness and coolness.

  • Yin yoga allows you to slow down and just `be’.

  • It’s deeply calming, healing and nourishing

  • Reduces anxiety and stress

  • Longer, static poses stretch deep into the connective tissue

  • Helps restore range of motion

  • Stimulates perception and awareness

You need a balance of yin and yang to stay fit and happy. For a truly mind-altering experience, try combining yin yoga with the `yang’ of hot yoga.

Can anyone do it?

Yes. It's simple, quiet and profoundly mindful.

Sounds easy? It isn’t. Holding poses for between 3 and 5 minutes can be mentally challenging. The aim is to stick with it and tune in, accepting and then overcoming your mind’s urge to leave the posture by using breath to focus on the present.

Everyone finds certain poses difficult, so don’t worry if you can’t manage all the postures. The teacher will look after you, suggesting alternatives and variations.

A bit more about the heat...

Why warm Yin?

It’s warm but not hot. The room is heated to a comfortable temperature to ensure your muscles are ready for some deep-down stretching.

It’s seriously deep. Those long, static postures reach down into the connective fascia tissue that weaves around not only muscles but also our organs and nerves.

The science

Long-term benefits of yin yoga

Daily life, stress and poor posture. They have a nasty tendency to bind fascia tissue together. You end up with a traffic jam, sticky adhesions that cause injuries, chronic pain and limited mobility.

Here's why:

The gentle pressure of Yin makes connective tissue more fluid. As a result, your practice can improve tightness in the hips and shoulders, and it’s great for rehabilitation after an injury. The heat also allows your body to relax more and move through the postures with ease.

And then there’s the breathing...

Right now, reading this, you’re probably breathing with only the top third of your lungs. Yoga requires calm, regular, full breaths that use maximum lung capacity so therefore your breathing becomes more efficient.

Encouraged by your teacher, you’ll quickly learn how to breathe like a Yogi. The result is less stress, more relaxation and greater alertness.
